Ruth’s Story

There’s a certain kind of magic that happens when someone stops forcing their life to fit… and instead builds something that fits them.

Ruth is one of those people.

Formerly a teacher, Ruth never lost her love of sharing knowledge, guiding others, or helping people feel confident as they learn something new. But after developing long Covid, everything shifted. Her health, her energy, and the way she could move through the world no longer aligned with the structure and demands of classroom life.

Like so many people navigating chronic illness, Ruth faced not only the physical reality of getting through each day, but also the emotional weight of trying to find answers, support, and understanding, often without much of any of it.

And somewhere in that difficult space, a quiet but powerful realisation formed: the life she was being asked to live now needed a different shape.

Instead of walking away from teaching altogether, Ruth reimagined it.

Ruth’s pivot

Drawing on her years of experience, her creativity, and her deep connection to traditional crafts, she pivoted into something slower, gentler, and far more aligned with who she is now. Today, through her work as Ruth Gray, she offers willow weaving workshops on the Kent and Sussex border that feel less like “classes” and more like an invitation to breathe.

Her workshops are welcoming, beginner-friendly, and beautifully mindful. Step by step, Ruth guides people through ancient techniques, encouraging them to switch off from the noise of everyday life and reconnect with their hands, their creativity, and themselves. There’s no rush. No pressure. Just learning, making, and being present.

Alongside willow weaving, Ruth is also an artist, writer, and as I’ve recently discovered, a brilliant lino printmaker too.

We’ve been spending time lino printing together, and it’s been such a joy. Sitting down, carving, chatting, creating… Ruth has helped me reconnect with a creative passion I’ve had for years but never quite made space for. That ability to gently guide, encourage, and make creativity feel accessible is no accident, it’s rooted in her years of teaching and her deep understanding of meeting people exactly where they are.

Creativity runs deep

Whether it’s willow weaving or lino printing, Ruth creates spaces where people can truly switch off, slow down, and enjoy the process of making. Her work is a beautiful reminder that pivots don’t have to be loud to be powerful, they just have to be honest.

Ruth also offers private sessions, workshops, and creative gatherings, each one rooted in the same ethos: meet people where they are, honour their pace, and help them enjoy the simple joy of making something by hand.

Her business isn’t just built on skill. It’s built on resilience, honesty, and a deep understanding that success doesn’t always look like pushing harder, sometimes it looks like pivoting with care.

If you’re craving creativity, calm, or a reminder that it’s okay to build a business that works with your life rather than against it, Ruth’s work is a beautiful place to start.
