Yes. If you’ve got a bit of budget spare for your business, professional photography is one of the best things you can spend it on. Good photos make your business look credible and established the moment someone lands on your website, they work across every channel you use, and one well-planned shoot can feed your marketing for months.

So let me save you the deliberation. Spend the money on the photographer. I mean it. Nine times out of ten.

I’ve worked in marketing for a long time now, and I’ve had the genuine pleasure of standing behind the scenes with some seriously talented photographers. One of my favourites was back in my dairy days, when we did a shoot for ice cream, and honestly, watching how they keep ice cream looking perfect under studio lights that want to melt it the second it’s out of the freezer was a thing of wonder (there’s a lot of trickery in food photography, I’ll let you look that one up). I’ve shot products in studios, I’ve done pets and animals, which was equal parts chaos and joy, and every single time I’ve come away with the same thought: this is what makes a brand look like it means it.

Can I just use my iPhone for business photos?

You can, if you’ve genuinely got the eye for it. An iPhone, or any of the really good handsets going at the moment, can produce absolutely splendid shots, so if you understand style, composition and lighting, 100% have a go yourself, you might surprise yourself. But if your idea of taking a photo is point-and-pray, this is exactly where your investment belongs. Both kinds of investment, actually: the time spent finding the right person, and the money spent on the shoot itself.

Why does professional photography make a brand look more credible?

Because people judge your business in seconds, and photos are the first thing they take in. When someone lands on your website, they decide in a heartbeat whether you’re a real, serious business or someone having a go, and nothing says “I take this seriously” quite like proper photography. You’ve invested in how your brand shows up, and people feel that, even if they couldn’t tell you why

Where can I use professional brand photos?

Pretty much everywhere: your website, your social media, your emails, your LinkedIn profile, your pitch decks. They don’t just sit on your homepage looking lovely, they work across everything you do. One good shoot feeds your content for months.

How do I prepare for a brand photoshoot?

Plan it properly, because it’s not a small investment of time or money and you want every minute to count. Plan a good few outfit changes. Book it in for after you’ve had your hair done. Think about the shots you actually need before the day, not on it. Make the most of the whole thing so you walk away with a library you’ll use, not three photos you tolerate.

And honestly? A really good shoot does something else too. It leaves you feeling genuinely excited about your business again. Especially if you’re service-based, where the truth is you’re selling you. Get that right and it’s worth every penny.

How do I choose the right photographer for my business?

Look at their actual work in your genre before anything else, because photographers are not interchangeable. Most specialise, and for good reason. You’ve got interiors photographers, who make a space feel like somewhere you want to be. People photographers. Branding photographers, which for a lot of you reading this is the one, who capture you and your team in a way that actually looks like your business. And then event photographers, who do something different again.

The person who makes products sing in a studio is not necessarily the one you want chasing a toddler or a spaniel round a field.

Should I use the same photographer for headshots and events?

Probably not, but it doesn’t have to be one or the other. A branding photographer will get you cracking headshots, and great shots of your colleagues while they’re at it. An event photographer captures the mood of a room, the energy, the candid moments, the feel of the day, in a way a portrait specialist simply won’t. So budget allowing, there’s a genuine case for getting both in, because they’re doing two very different jobs, and you’ll come away with a real feel for the whole thing rather than half of it.

Do photographers give you all the photos from a shoot?

It depends on the photographer. Some hand over every image from the day, others give you a curated selection, and their terms of business will spell out which. Neither’s wrong, but you want to know before you book, not after.

So if there’s one place to spend, spend it here. It pays you back in every pound and pence.
